After graduating from Duke University with a degree in religion and philosophy in 1995, Kurt Lutgert went on to work for The Lutgert Companies in Naples, Florida, where he is now vice-president of the group. Kurt Lutgert is also a supporter of the Harry Chapin Food Bank.

Founded in 1983, the Harry Chapin Food Bank of Southwest Florida is the Feeding America food bank in the area. In fiscal year 2015-2016, it distributed more than 20 million pounds of food, equaling about 17 million meals.

In May 2016, the food bank hosted a “hunger summit” called Seeing the World Through Their Eyes. The event featured community leaders and members of various affiliated food-assistance agencies, who discussed strategies to reduce hunger in southwest Florida.

The summit took place at the Harborside Event Center, where 12 speakers delivered remarks to an audience of 180. Workshops dealt with topics such as hunger in the senior community and the consequences of poverty on nutrition. Past beneficiaries of food assistance also shared their stories of how the programs helped them succeed.
